Student Handbook for Teacher Education
ADMISSION TO ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION
TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS
(Secondary 9-12, All Level K-12)
Students must meet the Admission to Teacher Education Programs requirements, as well as the following requirements to be accepted into the Alternative Certification Program:
1. Hold a relevant baccalaureate degree for three years.
2. Submit certified copies of all college and graduate transcripts.
3. Complete a satisfactory interview by admission committee or advisor for the program.
4. Present documentation of employment with an area school district.
5. Successful background check.
6. Successfully complete the PRAXIS II. Students will bring score sheet to the Department of Education . If a student’s score is low in a particular area, the student will be encouraged to enroll in an additional course(s) in the content area at William Jewell. Students will have several opportunities to take the exam, once in the summer, and again in the fall and/or spring, if necessary.
7. Submission of two recommendation forms with 80% ratings of average of higher by persons who can comment on your academic teaching or professional ability.
8. Hold a overall cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
9. Achieve a grade point average of at least 2.7 in professional development courses, with no grade lower than a "C." The grade of "C-" is considered lower than a "C."
10. Submit a $50 application fee to the Evening and Continuing Education Division.

EDU 307 (2 hrs.) Teaching Reading in Content Areas
EDU 310 (2 hrs.) Instructional Methodology
*EDU 311 (2 hrs.) Clinical Field Experience
EDU 3XX (2-4 hrs.) Teaching (Content Area)
EDU 205 (3 hrs.) Educational Psychology
EDU 215 (2 hrs.) Information Technology
EDU 405 (2 hrs.) Classroom Management
EDU 330 (3 hrs.) Foundations of Education
(GEN 284 4 hrs. Schools and Society substitutes for EDU 330.)
TOTAL = 21-24 credits
EDU 424 (10 hrs.) Secondary Student Teaching
EDU 425 (10 hrs.) All-Level Student Teaching
*Fieldwork observations will extend over 2 semesters

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of the William Jewell College change in the calculation of grade point averages effective Fall 2003, the Department of Education has modified it’s grade point policies. Pursuant to those changes a grade of “C-“ is no longer considered a grade of “C”. |
