Student Handbook for Teacher Education

Effective for Students applying for Admission to Teacher Education 2005-2006

ADMISSION TO THE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PROGRAM

 

Students must meet the  Admission to Teacher Education Programs requirements, as well as the following requirements to be accepted into the Teacher Education Program:

 

1.     Submit an Application for Admission to Teacher Education Program.

 

2.     A Declaration of Intent form on file with the Department of Education.

 

            3.   Completion of at least one semester at William Jewell College.

 

            4.   Completion of forty-five (45) semester hours.

 

            5.   An overall grade point average (g.p.a.) of at least 2.50.

 

          *6.   Minimum g.p.a. of 2.70 with no grade below "C". (In all situations, the grade of "C-" is classified as below the grade of "C") in the "General Education Skills Courses": GEN 101, GEN 102, and GEN 103/104.

 

            7.   Must meet one of these three options:

                  a.   A score on the ACT of 23 or above.

                  b.   An average score on the C-BASE of 300 with a score of at least 235 on each sub-test.

                  c.   A g.p.a. of at least 3.0 in the required elementary education courses for admission (EDU 205, 211, 234).

 

8.    A score of 235 on each sub-test of the C-BASE.

Three(3) time limit—If applicant fails to meet C-BASE requirements after three attempts, the applicant cannot be admitted to undergraduate teacher education at WJC.

 

9.   Completion of Education courses, EDU 211, EDU 205 and EDU 234 with a g.p.a. of 2.7 and no grade lower than a “C”.        

                                                            

        10.  A score on the ACT or SAT.  NOTE:  People with a score of 20 or below often have difficulty on the C-BASE and the PRAXIS II.

 

           11.  No grade below a "C" in the elementary education major courses, including EDU 201, 202, 203, 215, and 250.

 

12.   A Faculty Recommendation Form  from a William Jewell faculty member not in the Department of Education. The student must receive a positive rating of no less than 80% on the instrument. The student needs to have been a member of a class taught by the  faculty member writing the recommendation.

 

13.   Field Experience Evaluation: 80% or higher rating on early field experience feedback from cooperating teacher(s).

 

14.   Positive endorsement from education faculty.

Education students will not be permitted to enroll in Education courses at or above the 300 level until they have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program.

Elementary Education students must take 30 hrs. of Education courses at William Jewell College, including:

 

                        EDU 211: Techniques of Teaching in the Elementary School

                        EDU 309: Mathematics for the Elementary Teacher

                     EDU 314: Methods of Teaching an Integrated Curriculum.            

                        EDU 410: Student Teaching for Elementary School Teachers

*Transfer students entering William Jewell College with fewer than 30 hrs. and all first year students will need to take these General Education courses, or their equivalents, with a minimum gpa of 2.7: GEN 101-Oral Communication; GEN 102-Written Communication and GEN 103-Math Model Bldg. & Statistics.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of the William Jewell College change in the calculation of grade point averages effective Fall 2003, the Department of Education has modified it’s grade point policies. Pursuant to those changes a grade of “C-“ is no longer considered a grade of “C”.
