Baseball: Coaching Staff
Mike Stockton is entering his seventh season as the Head Baseball Coach at William Jewell College. In his six years at the helm of the Cardinals program he has been named the Conference and Region “Coach of the Year” three times, winning the awards in 2002, 2004 & 2007. The Cardinals are averaging 43 wins a year and in 6 years they have had 8 players sign professional baseball contracts.
Stockton came to WJC after serving as the assistant coach at Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, TX for two years where he was the infield and hitting coach. The DBU squad made back-to-back trips to the NAIA World Series, finishing as the National Champion runner-up in 2000 and fifth in 2001. Under Stockton’s guidance, the team set a new NAIA single season record for double plays with 82 during the 2000 season.
Prior to DBU, Stockton served as an assistant coach for the University of Kansas baseball team from 1998-99, coaching the Jayhawk infielders and assisting with hitting while earning a Master’s degree in Sports Psychology.
Stockton played college baseball for Ottawa University in Ottawa, KS. His team won the conference championship 2 out of 3 years he was there and Stockton was named "Conference Player of the Year" his senior year and was named to the “All-American” team.
Following his graduation from Ottawa, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in English, Stockton played with the Royal Antwerp Eagles out of Antwerp, Belgium. He was the starting shortstop the next two years for the club and was crowned the League’s Most Valuable Player in 1998.

Coach Joel Lueken will enter his third season with the Cardinals after spending seven years as the head baseball coach at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Coach Lueken serves as the hitting and outfield coach, coaches first base and helps with the recruiting efforts.
In all, Lueken has coached 12 All-Region players, 1 First Team All-American and 8 Academic All-Region selections during his time at Ellsworth College. In addition, coach Lueken placed his players throughout the country at all different types of four year institutions including NAIA and NCAA Divison I, II and III schools.
A native of Dubuque Iowa, Lueken started his college baseball career as an outfielder at Ellsworth Community College and then transferred to Ottawa University where he was an All-Conference outfielder and was part of back-to-back Conference Championships. He graduated with a degree in History and finished up his final semester of college as an assistant coach for Ottawa.
 Jesse McSpadden Assistant Coach Jesse McSpadden enters his first year as an assistant coach with the William Jewell baseball team after spending the last four as a key member of the Cardinals pitching staff. Coach McSpadden’s primary responsibilities will include working with the pitchers, recruiting, coordinate baseball camps and help current William Jewell players find summer leagues to play in.
A graduate of Park Hill High School, McSpadden accepted a scholarship to play at Jewell and became a four year letter winner, 1st team All-Conference and 1st team All-Region pitcher. During his career at Jewell he helped guide the Cardinals to four straight regional appearances and a HAAC Conference Championship in 2007. During the summer of 2006 Jesse was named the Ban Johnson summer league pitcher of the year.
Coach McSpadden graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Sport as well as a minor in Coaching. He is currently working on his masters’ degree in Athletic Administration.
Jesse resides in Liberty, Mo., with his wife Staci.
