Cardinal Football Drops to 0-7 with Loss to Avila Contact: Paul Worstell, 816-415-5959 October 25, 2009
The William Jewell Cardinal football team continues to struggle with a 20-15 loss at home to Avila University on October 24, their seventh straight loss on the year.
Each team had their opportunity to blow the game open as the contest was filled with turnovers: Avila gave the ball away five times and Jewell turned it over four times. Still, the Cardinals had a chance for their first win of the season with three minutes left. Down by five and driving from deep in their own end as time wound down, Jewell had a first and ten at the Avila 20 with 90 seconds left in the game. A running play, an incomplete pass, a sack, and a forced pass over the middle due to an increasingly effective Avila pass rush, and the Cardinals were left to watch the Eagles run out the clock and celebrate their win.
The Cardinals had plenty to be proud of in the losing effort, including outgaining Avila 368 yards to 319. Jewell had 148 yards rushing and 220 yards passing, led by Bobby Rech’s 89 yards on the ground and 91 yards in receptions.
Ryan Florence, a senior cornerback from Columbia, Missouri, had two interceptions in the game and safety Daniel Meegan, a junior from Dallas Lake, Texas, had another for the Cardinals. Dave Diener had eight tackles for Jewell.
The Cardinals now travel to Baker University for their next game on October 31.
