What is Cardinal Term?
Cardinal Term is the interim period between the fall and spring semesters at William Jewell College during which the College offers a number of activities, including Cardinal Term Seminars, the Justice Summit, Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, public book discussions and films, along with time for Jewell students to participate in undergraduate research and internship opportunities.
All events are open to members of the Jewell community, and many are also offered to the general public. Cardinal Term runs from January 4 to January 19, 2010.

Cardinal Term Seminars Cardinal Term Seminars scheduled during the winter break allow Jewell alumni, faculty and friends of the College to share their expertise in a variety of topics and subject areas with students and community members. No credit is given and there is no cost for the courses.

The 2010 Cardinal Term Seminars feature topics such as Afghan history, sustainability in business, independent filmmaking and music of the Holocaust. This is an opportunity to learn about intriguing subjects in a relaxed atmosphere. Community members and all members of the William Jewell community are invited to attend the Cardinal Term Seminars.

 Travel Seminar to Mexico January 5-15, Cuernavaca, Mexico Alumni, community members and current Jewell students are invited to participate in The Cardinal Term travel seminar to Mexico, which is coordinated by the William Jewell College Department of Languages in conjunction with the Center for Global Education (http://www.augsburg.edu/global/mexico/index.html) in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Each day of the 10-day trip will include language study, academic lectures, cultural visits and reflection activities.
Though topics in future years may vary, this year’s trip will focus on an analysis of the conditions of immigration from the Mexican perspective. Participants will engage the people and culture of Mexico in this immersion experience. Family members with whom participants will stay during the weekend homestays have been through the immigrant experience and are prepared to share their insights. Departure is from Kansas City is Tuesday, January 5, with a return on Friday, January 15.
Full participation in the travel seminar, including completing all required assignments, will complete the Reflective Citizenship component of the ACT-In major for current William Jewell College students.

Village Partners Honduras Project Alumni, friends and community members are invited to join William Jewell College students and faculty and staff members as they continue the Village Partners Project January 5-14 in Embarcadero, Honduras.
Over the past six years, more than 110 students have participated in this interdisciplinary approach to community-building in which participants apply expertise from their individual fields of study to real-world issues. This year’s effort focuses on working alongside village residents to build ecological latrines for each village family. ‘A Better World’ Justice Summit Celebration 7 p.m. January 15, John Gano Memorial Chapel William Jewell College campus, Liberty, Mo.
The Center for Justice and Sustainability will offer ‘A Better World’ public celebration at 7 p.m. January 15 in John Gano Memorial Chapel. This special public session, which is part of the Center’s first annual Justice Summit, will feature keynote Robert J. Mann, the premiere of a choral composition focused on themes of justice and sustainability performed by the William Jewell College Concert Choir and reports on Justice and Sustainability projects. Northland Annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration 10 a.m. January 18, John Gano Memorial Chapel William Jewell College campus, Liberty, Mo.
The public is invited to attend the Northland’s annual Martin Luther King Day celebration hosted at William Jewell College’s Gano Chapel. Tickets or reservations are not required. Event details are to be announced.

Speaker Bios
Dr. Mark Luce
Mark has lived for more than 25 years in the Middle East and Central/South Asia (Libya, Tunisia, Afghanistan, Iran, the United Arab Emirates Pakistan and Jordan) where he maintained contacts with Afghans and Afghanistan and has researched the development of 20th century Afghan education. In 2002, he was asked by the U.N. to be one of 27 International Monitors to observe district and regional level elections for the Emergency Loya Jirga. He worked in Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzagan and Helmand provinces and was then assigned as a technical advisor to the secretariat for the Loya Jirga in Kabul. Mark graduated from William Jewell in 1971 and holds a B.A. in Classics, an M.A. in Near Eastern Languages & Literature from the University of Washington (1977), and recently completed his Ph.D. in Islamic thought at the University of Chicago.
Mr. Ed Douglas
Ed Douglas, CFP™ retired at the beginning of 2006 from Citizens Bancshares, headquartered in Chillicothe, Mo., after nearly thirty-two years with the company, having spent the last twenty as president and, later, chairman and CEO. Under his leadership, the company grew its capital and increased assets over tenfold to a $1 billion bank holding company with locations in twenty-five towns. His current title is Chairman Emeritus and Board Member of Citizens Bancshares. He is a Certified Financial Planner and currently operates a financial planning and consulting business.
Mr. Daniel Belcher
Dan is a world-renowned opera star who has been described as having a voice “of beautiful melting sweetness…”(Süddeutsche Zeitung) and the theatrical talent “to create a first-rate portrayal that drew the listener more and more into the hopes and despair of his character” (The Houston Chronicle). In the 2009-10 season, Dan appeared as Captain Corcoran in HMS Pinafore with Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and will appear as Taddeo in L’Italiana in Algeri with Utah Symphony & Opera, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Portland Opera and will return to Houston Grand Opera and also debut with Opera Colorado in future seasons . . . . He recently recorded Kaija Saariaho’s L’Amour de Loin with Harmonia Mundi, conducted by Kent Nagano. The critically acclaimed recording received the Diapason d'Or award from Diapason Magazine for October 2009. Dan graduated from William Jewell in 1992 and resides in Liberty with his wife Kathleen and daughter Madelyn. Dan is receiving the Citation for Achievement at this year’s Achievement Day ceremonies.
Mr. Tom Coleman
Tom Coleman is a former member of Congress who represented Missouri’s sixth district. He is a government relations professional with over twenty-five years of experience in Washington, DC. Positions held include sixteen years as a Republican member of Congress from Missouri and ten years as Vice President, Government Relations for BASF Corporation. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Organization for International Investment. Tom graduated from William Jewell in 1965 with a degree in economics. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree at Washington University School of Law, St. Louis, Missouri and has a Master’s of Public Administration from New York University.
Mr. Mark Mathes
Mark is President /CEO of Vanguard Packaging, Inc., a manufacturer of paper packaging and point-of-purchase displays; President/CEO of Vanguard Label, a manufacturer of pressure sensitive labels and spiral wound tubes; and is Owner/Operator of MVP Baseball Training Academy. He is a frequent speaker at industry seminars and associations. Mark graduated from William Jewell in 1979 and resides in Liberty with his wife Karen (class of 1980) and three sons.
Mr. Jim Murray
Jim serves as Music Director and Conductor of the Northland Symphony Orchestra (Kansas City, MO); Heritage Philharmonic (Eastern Jackson County, MO); and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of Kansas City, an ensemble that he founded in 1997. Praised by the Kansas City Star for his repertoire selection, Mr. Murray’s formal training includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from William Jewell College (class of 1995) and a Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Denver. Off the podium, Jim is the Music Coordinator and an Instructor of Music at the Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods.
Dr. Bert Adams and Mrs. Diane Adams
Bert is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He is a former President and currently a Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations. He has taught sociological theory extensively, both in East Africa and at the University of Wisconsin, and also teaches and writes on the sociology of the family. He is the author of several books, including the introductory textbook The Family: a Sociological Interpretation, 5th Edition (Harcourt Brace 1995) and Sociological Theory (Pine Forge Press 2001). Bert graduated from William Jewell in 1954 and also holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. Diane is on the Board of Directors for Kenya’s Jirani Project, and she graduated from William Jewell in 1955. Bert and Diane have nearly 40 years of experience working in East Africa, and they reside in Madison, Wisconsin.
Dr. Joe Crossett, Mr. Scott Lakin, and Mr. Steve Smith
Joe has contributed over 30 years of service to Liberty Hospital, and is currently the hospital’s administrator. Joe has been a member of the Missouri Hospital Association’s (MHA) Board of Trustees since 1995 and became board chair in 2004. He was the president of the Kansas City Metropolitan Healthcare Council in 2001 and served as chair of the MHA’s legislative advisory council from 2000-2002. Crossett received MHA’s Visionary Leadership Award in 2007. Joe has been recognized for his extensive community service in Liberty. In 2005, he received the Northland Community Service Award from Commerce Bank. Joe graduated from William Jewell in 1971 and was honored with the Citation for Achievement award in 2002. He and his wife Bonnie (class of 1972) live in Liberty.
Scott is President and CEO of Lakin Consulting, LLC, which provides consulting services in the areas of insurance, management, and government. His past work experience includes a stint as the Director of the Missouri Department of Insurance from 2001-2005; serving as the elected Missouri State Representative for the 33rd District of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1992-2001; working as an insurance agent for two financial services companies from 1985-1998; and serving as a congressional aide to U.S. Representative Dick Bolling from 1979-1983. Scott graduated from William Jewell in 1980 and he and his wife Cindy (class of 1979) reside in Kansas City, Mo.
Steve works for Peterson ePractice Advantage and is responsible for budgeting and forecasting, revenue and expense analyses, company compliance with HIPAA privacy and security requirements, and for PePA's billing software system. Joining Peterson ePractice Advantage as a HIPAA Security Consultant and Billing Specialist in 2004, he also has served as Assistant Billing Supervisor and HIPAA Privacy and Security Director. Steve graduated from William Jewell in 2003, and holds a master’s in business administration from Mid-America Nazarene University.
Mr. Clayton Brown
Clayton is a documentary and narrative filmmaker. Recent films of note include The Atom Smashers, a documentary that follows a team of physicists working with a particle accelerator on a quest to find a particle that gives mass to everything in the universe. The film has been screened in multiple national and international film festivals and has aired as a part of the PBS series Independent Lens. Galileo’s Grave received top prize in Chicago’s 2005 Independent Feature Project competition. I Will if You Will received a 5th-place finish in the New York Film Festival. And Relax is a short film commissioned by Microsoft. Clayton graduated from William Jewell in 1990 and resides in Chicago, Ill.

During the Cardinal Term period, William Jewell College students will participate in various independent research projects and internships.
Housing and Dining for Members of the William Jewell College Community For the convenience of current William Jewell College students, the campus residence halls will be open, and students participating in Cardinal Term activities can live on campus at no cost, provided they inform the Office of Student Affairs by December 11th. Dining Services will provide options for food purchases.
