Cardinals Frustrated as Baker Defeats Jewell 26-6 Contact: Paul Worstell, 816-415-5959 November 2, 2009
The William Jewell Cardinal football team and its fans continue to be frustrated as the Cards lost their eighth game this season in eight starts, this time on the road at Baker 26-6.
The Cardinals started strong again, moving the ball early behind the running of sophomore Bobby Rech (27 attempts, 102 yards) and a 19 yard touchdown pass to junior Taylor Gallagher. The extra point was blocked but Jewell had a 6-0 lead with two minutes left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, a bad snap on a Jewell punt resulted in a safety, followed by the kickoff going out of bounds giving Baker a short field. Richie Bryant ended the drive with a one yard dive, which was followed shortly afterward by a 22 yard field goal, and the Wildcats lead 12-6 at half.
The Cardinals had their chances to get back into the game. Baker faced a third and long situation late in the third quarter, and despite good pressure on Wildcat quarterback Mack Brown he was able to get a short pass away to Bryant, who turned the reception into a 77 yard catch-and-run to make the score 19-6.
With time running out in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals were driving deep in Baker territory hoping to score and have a chance at an onside kick. Sophomore backup quarterback Tom Farinacci, who had replaced an injured Drew Witman and driven Jewell inside the Wildcat 10 yard line, was hit and fumbled as he tried to pass. The ball was picked up and returned 88 yards for a touchdown by Matt Brock with under a minute left, adding an exclamation point to the Baker effort on the afternoon.
Zach Traphagen, playing with a broken and heavily taped left hand, led the team with seven tackles and two passes broken up.
The Cards now will return to Liberty for the final home game of the year against winless Culver-Stockton on November 7. The game will kickoff at 1:00.
