Cardinals Lose Home Game to Evangel 24-7 Contact: Paul Worstell, 816-415-5959 September 27, 2009
The William Jewell College Cardinals fell to 0-3 this season as they lost to Heart of America Athletic Conference rival Evangel 24-7 Saturday night in Liberty.
Each team scored on their opening drive, with Evangel taking a 7-0 lead on a one yard run by Jermaine Walker and Jewell countering with a 2 yard run by junior tailback Jake Lynch. Evangel quickly came down the field again, but had to settle for a 38 yard Trevor Gies field goal to retake the lead with 2:04 left in the first quarter.
The game quickly became a defensive struggle for the next two quarters, with Jewell unable to move the ball on the ground and Evangel being unable to score despite moving the ball well.
As the fourth quarter began Evangel’s versatile Freddie Brown, who played most of the game as a slot receiver, lined up as a quarterback. His option run through the middle of the Cardinal defense for 69 yards, followed shortly thereafter by a 38 yard interception return for a touchdown by the Crusader’s Derek Jammer, sealed the Cardinal’s fate.
Jewell finished with 294 yards passing, but only 5 net yards rushing; Evangel ground out 219 yards rushing but only 62 yards passing. The Cardinals had two turnovers and the Crusaders had none.
Junior receiver Adam McBride had 144 yards in pass receptions, and junior Taylor Gallagher added another 99 yards in receptions. Junior linebacker Dave Diener had eight tackles on defense, while freshman nose tackle Josh Mathis had seven tackles and a sack.
