Don’t let the final score fool you; the Cardinals lost big to Mid America Nazarene on Saturday but played very well on the road.

The final score of 45-6 reflects a huge ten-minute stretch by MNU beginning with under a minute left in the third quarter, when MNU claimed their first lead of the day at 10-6 and went on to score five more touchdowns during that time frame, including two pass interceptions run back for touchdowns.

The Cardinal defense held MNU in check for nearly three entire periods before the onslaught late in the third period.

The Pioneers and Jewell were scoreless before a J.R. Reynolds field goal from 42 yards gave Jewell a 3-0 lead with :25 seconds left in the half. MNU returned the kickoff to midfield, gained a first down with two consecutive passes, and kicked a 46 yard field goal with no time left in the half to go to the locker room tied at three.

The third quarter featured more defense through most of the period. The Cardinals got another Reynolds field goal to lead 6-3 with 2:28 left in the third, only to see MNU cap a drive of less than two minutes with a 14 yard scoring pass to take the 10-6 lead with only :48 seconds left. It was at this point that MNU took charge of the game.

The Pioneers scored on a 5 yard run, another pass, a 31 yard interception return, another short run, and finally on yet another 31 yard pass interception return to make the final 45-6. Jewell threatened to score in the last minute but was turned away at the seven yard line as time expired.

Bobby Rech, a sophomore from Wichita, Kansas and one of four backs used by Jewell to replace injured starter Jake Lynch, had 69 yards rushing on 16 attempts. Starting quarterback Drew Witman threw for 121 yards but was picked off twice. Reynolds hit for the two field goals on three attempts.

The Cardinals return to Liberty to face Avila next Saturday, with kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
