Regardless of the area of emphasis, you begin with the same core classes. Deepened appreciation of literature, strengthened writing skills and enhanced knowledge of language usage at the introductory level prepare you to choose an emphasis:
The Literature Emphasis allows intense, enlivening discussion about great literature and encourages rigorous thought while reading intensively and writing well. The literature emphasis is recommended for students interested in graduate studies in English or professional studies in law or other fields.
The Writing Emphasis is designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers in which writing skills are required. The writing emphasis is a strong complement to other majors at William Jewell, particularly business or communication.
The Teaching Emphasis is recommended if students are planning a career in English education in grades 9-12. Students will complete the requirements not only for a degree in English but also for certification to teach.
