English is recognized as one of the best undergraduate courses of preparation for an increasingly complex, rapidly changing, information-based society. Within the English department, you explore the worlds of language and literature while employing creativity and imagination through careful reading and thoughtful response.
You are able to choose areas of emphasis that help you to reach your educational and professional aspirations. Specific tracks in literature, writing or teaching are designed to provide a specialization to meet your needs. All emphases are based on the study of language and literature, the foundations of liberal learning.
In addition to classroom work, William Jewell's close proximity to Kansas City allows for a variety of internship opportunities. English majors have had recent hands-on experience as interns at Kansas City Area Development Council, Children's Mercy Hospital, Target Marketing and Potpourri (literary journal).
