Certificate in Health Care Management, Division of Continuing Education William Jewell College
This undergraduate program is targeted at persons who are working in administrative and clerical roles in hospitals, physicians’ offices, nursing homes and corporate and government health care settings. The program provides management and business education for students to advance their careers in health care and be of better and more effective use to health care providers and patients alike.
A minimum of 18 hours of courses specific to this field is required, with a minimum of nine of those hours being completed at William Jewell College.
Required courses include:
GEN 102: Written Communication (or equivalent transfer composition course with a grade of C or above)
BUS 204 Introduction to Health Care Management and Delivery 3 credit hours This course introduces students to the US health care system and serves as the introductory course in the sequence of courses on health care management. Major components of the health care system including, among others, health care institutions, personnel, and financing mechanisms will be covered. The course also deals with the history of the healthcare system, planning, and problems in clinical and institutional settings.
BUS 201 Business Organization and Management 3 credit hours Concepts and structures of organizations, personality, and intra-personal relations, functions and activities requiring management and managerial activities.
BUS 301 Human Resources Management 3 credit hours An examination of the human resource function focusing on the complete cycle of activities from initial human resources planning to final performance
BUS 314 Health Care Financials 3 credit hours This course offers and introduction to the tools and methods of health care financial management through an overview of health care financial statements, principles of health care accounting, capital financing, cost information, and provider cost and payment systems. Previous background in finance and accounting is not required.

BUS 224 Law for Health Care Consumers and Providers 3 credit hours This course seeks to provide clear definitions and concepts of the major issues in health law today. Using case studies, the complicated and always evolving area of health care law will be examined. This course is cross-listed with William Jewell College’s paralegal program.
BUS 304 Current Issues in Health Care 3 credit hours This designation allows for the development and offering of courses which are tailored to the particular interests of students and to the study of topics that are not covered in the regular curriculum of the college or the Health Care Management Certificate Program. Topics my include, but will not be limited to, Economics of Health Care; Ethical Considerations in Health Care; Medicare/Third Party Payment; Eldercare; and others.
CST 155 Business Information Systems 4 credit hours An introduction to computer hardware, software, procedures and system concepts with the integration and application of these concepts to business and other segments of society. Microcomputer productivity tools commonly used in business will be discussed and applied.
