Prior to attending William Jewell, Charlie Pilz graduated from McKinley High School in St. Louis Missouri. He then attended the University of Missouri-Columbia for two years, where he practiced but did not play with, the baseball squad for both years. He then attended Kansas City, Kansas Community College in the fall of 1960.
Pilz lettered twice in Baseball for the Cards in 1962 and 1963. His top season was in 1963 in which the stats clearly demonstrate a phenomenal year. He led WJC and the MCAU in each of the following categories: .442 batting average (#9 in the NAIA), 11 home runs (#2 in NAIA), 82 total bases (5th in the NAIA), and slugging percentage of .863 (#3 in the NAIA). As a third basemen, Pilz was named 1st Team All-Conference, the Cardinals Most Valuable Player and an NAIA 2nd Team All-American in 1963. He was Jewell’s first ever NAIA All-American in Baseball. The Cardinals were MCAU Champions both seasons that Charlie played at Jewell. The team’s two year record was 30-24. Aside from playing baseball, Pilz was also an Economics major.
Upon graduating from Jewell, Pilz was employed by Trans World Airlines in Chicago from 1964-1966. He was also employed by Herff Jones from 1966-1975, and Rite Sole from 1975-2000. He now runs his own sales organization.
Pilz and his wife, Lynn, reside in St. Louis, Missouri. The couple has four children: Charles H. III, Daniel, Boyd, Virginia. They also have one grandson, Charles IV (Chaz).
