Larry Holley

Larry Holley graduated from Jameson Missouri High School in 1963.
Holley lettered 12 times, four times in each cross country, basketball, and track and was the captain of each sport as a senior. He participated on seven conference championship teams, (two in each cross country and track, and three in basketball.) He was named MCAU All-Conference (2nd Team) and NAIA All-District 16 (2nd Team) in basketball as well as Jewell’s Athlete of the Year as a senior. Holley scored 1122 points in his career. He was also a member of two school record relay teams in track (Sprint Medley and Distance Medley). He placed in seven different events at MCAU outdoor conference track meets during his career (440, 880, mile, long jump, triple jump, 440 relay, mile relay. He also majored in physical education.
After graduating from Jewell he received his M.Ed. Degree at the University of Missouri Columbia in 1968. He coached one year at Harrisburg Missouri High School from 1968-69. He also coached for six years at Central Methodist College from 1969-75; also he coached for four years at Northwest Missouri State University from 1975-79; two of these years were spent as the top assistant and two as the head coach.
Later, in the fall of 1979 Holley returned to Jewell as the head men’s basketball coach. Since taking on the position he has guided the Cards to nine HAAC titles and seven national tournaments appearances. Four of those teams reached the final four. Sixteen of his teams have won 30 or more games. He has also received 12 Coach of the Year Awards including the Sears/NABC honor as the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1966. He was the first NAIA coach to receive this honor.

Coach Holley is the career leader in wins among HAAC basketball coaches. He’s had twenty 20-win seasons (thirteen teams have had 25 or more wins and four have won 30 or more). He is only the 28th NCAA or NAIA coach to reach 700 wins (752 is his total entering the 2008-2009 season.) He ranks #2 among all NAIA coaches (Division I & II – 276 schools) and #10 among active four-year college coaches (NCAA I, II, III & NAIA I & II – 1261 schools). He ranks #1 all-time in career wins among four-year college coaches coaching only at Missouri colleges/universities.

Holley has coached fifteen NAIA All-Americans (20 selections) including one who was named NAIA II National Player of the Year (Brook Russell: 1996). Twelve of his players (19 selections) have been named NAIA Academic All-Americans. While at Jewell 118 out of 123 of his fourth year players have graduated (96%).

He has three daughters: Lindsey, Lauren and Lacey.
