Bowles was a student athlete from 1908-1912 and acted as both coach and athletic director from 1912-1947. He was a star athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He became Jewell’s first full-time Coach and Athletic Director in 1912. He coached football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, and golf during his tenure at Jewell. His teams won 50 Conference Championships. Bowles was elected to the NAIA Football Hall of Fame in 1959. All of his five children graduated from William Jewell. R.E. Bowles is considered the ‘Father of William Jewell College Athletics.' |
