Lambuth (Tenn.) University, a No. 1 seed in the 29th Annual NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championships, cruised to an 82-59 victory over No. 8 seed William Jewell (Mo.) College. Kayla Bryant sank five three pointers as she posted a team-high 19 points to lead the Lady Eagles of Lambuth.
After both teams swapped baskets over the first few possessions, Lambuth held a 10-9 lead at the 15:31 mark in the first half. A basket by Lambuth’s Kristin Brison sparked a 23-4 run over the next nine minutes to put the Lady Eagles up 33-13. William Jewell’s Hillary Adams tried to keep her team close with four first half three pointers, on her way to a game-high 21 points. But Lambuth maintained a double figure advantage for the remainder of the game, leading 43-28 at the half.
Helping the Lady Eagles to their 15-point halftime lead was 54-percent (7-13) shooting from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. They finished the night, 42-percent (14-33) from three-point-range.
In the second half, Lambuth stretched their lead up to as many as 31 points, 68-37, with 10:21 left in the game. William Jewell was able to cut into the lead late as they got to within 20 points, but time ran out on the Cardinals in the 82-59 loss.
Bryant led four Lambuth players in double figures with her 19 points. Chytearra Kintchen added a double-double with 13 points and 12 assists, while Ashley Franklin and Yolanda Johnson scored 12 and 11 points respectively. William Jewell was led by Adams’ 21 points. Erica Ferguson scored 14 for the Cardinals.
Lambuth (26-5) advances to the second round and will face the Azusa Pacific (Calif.)/Southern Nazarene winner at 9:45 p.m. on Friday. William Jewell ends their season 24-10.
