Jewell faculty chosen for Fulbright awards Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 March 26, 2008 William Jewell College faculty members Nano Nore, professor of art, and Rychetta Watkins, assistant professor of English, have been chosen to participate in a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad seminar organized by Johnson County Community College. This five-week seminar will take place in Morocco in June and early July. Participants in the seminar will study the complex veins of cultural identity that comprise present-day Morocco, with particular attention to the role that Islam plays in shaping cultural, political and artistic discourse. The five-week seminar includes secondary, community college and four-year college teachers. Educators will experience life in an African country through lectures, informal conversations with Moroccan peers, visits to Moroccan homes and an array of site visits and guided tours to various corners of the country. The focus will be on the richness and complexity of Moroccan cultural and religious identity. The seminar is designed to offer a meaningful overseas experience to teachers and to provide teachers with a greater understanding of Morocco and the cultural richness and complexity of an Islamic society. Participants will gather materials useful for classroom instruction on Islam and the Islamic world, and Morocco in particular. Educators will develop curricular units on Morocco aimed at internationalizing their courses. Instructional models developed during the seminar will be published on a website for other educators to use. Nore, a resident of Liberty, received her B.F.A from the Kansas City Art Institute; her M.A. and M.F.A. from Texas Woman’s University; and her M.A.R.S. from Central Baptist Theological Seminary. She joined the William Jewell faculty in 1988. Watkins, a resident of Kansas City, North, received her A.B. from Washington University-St. Louis and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. She joined the Jewell faculty in 2005.
