Jewell students receive research awards from national honor society Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 November 11, 2009 Biology and biochemistry majors from William Jewell College were awarded four research scholarships from Beta Beta Beta, the National Biological Honor Society. The grant money, averaging $800 each, will be used to fund their laboratory research at William Jewell. These students will present the results of their research at the regional Beta Beta Beta meeting in the spring. • Brittany Belke, Project title: An Investigation of the Effect of the LG3 Fragment of Perlecan on Fatty Acid-Induced Apoptosis in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells. Research advisor: Dr. Tara Allen • Cameron Evans, Project title: Investigating the Effect of the Protein-Hormone Leptin on the K562 Erythroleukemia Cell Line K562, Elucidating Possible Mechanisms for Chemoresistance. Research advisor: Dr. Lori Wetmore • Hannah Lewis and Kelsey Rogers, Project title: Evaluation of the Interaction Between p75NTR and A2A Receptors in the Presence of Amyloid-β in PC12 Neuronal Cells. Research advisor: Dr. Lori Wetmore • Julianne Schwerdtfager, Project title: Effects of Endothelin-1 on the Fas Death Pathway in Vascular Smooth Muscle: Implications for Atherosclerosis.
