Responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting and set-up of the William Jewell College physics laboratory and equipment including computer-based equipment. Responsible for running and maintaining the Physics Machine Shop. Participates creatively in developing and implementing laboratory experiences as well as participating with undergraduates in conducting research.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Management of Physics Teaching Laboratory facilities:
• Maintains, troubleshoots, and sets up laboratory equipment for introductory and advanced physics laboratories and demonstration equipment;
• Directs student workers in setting up introductory laboratories;
• Insures that computers are in working order for laboratory and research experience—requiring interaction with Information Services;
• Orders equipment and supplies;
• Maintains storage of equipment and supplies;
• Insures that software for laboratories is maintained and upgraded—LabVIEW, MATLAB, and others as required.
- Management of Physics Shop
• Maintains physics metal shop as a clean and safe environment;
• Performs metal working as required by physics faculty;
• Assists students in the use of the Shop;
• Orders needed tools and equipment.
- Provides assistance in maintaining research and astronomy equipment
• Insures safe and proper handling of chemicals, cryogens and gas cylinders;
• Coordinates with Facilities Management and insures the proper and safe disposal of laboratory equipment.
• Assists in the installation of equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, or related field is required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Basic machining, computer competency, general electrical and mechanical skills appropriate for managing a college-level physics laboratory is required;
- Excellent interpersonal skills required for interaction with faculty and students;
- Self-directed and self-motivated individual who can manage time and resources wisely.
Working Conditions
Normal laboratory environment.
