Media Kit: Web Style Guide (Quick Reference)

Introduction

Jewell offers hosting services for web pages to all campus departments via the ContentM content management system. The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines for developing and maintaining pages online. These guidelines are intended to promote uniformity throughout the Jewell web site while allowing creativity to page authors.

This guide will discuss required guidelines as well as suggestions designed to enhance your web pages. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in removal from the Jewell web site.

This guide is designed for Web authors with basic knowledge ContentM and/or HTML. If you have questions regarding this document or the Jewell web site, you may contact the Webmaster.

Please Note: Web sites developed outside of ContentM, or hosted separately from www.jewell.edu, will not be maintained by the Webmaster or the Office of College Relations and Marketing. These 'third-party' sites must also be approved by the Office of College Relations and Marketing if the content is in any way Jewell related. Requests for sites developed and hosted on a campus server other than ContentM must go through the IS Help Desk.

Student Organizations & Clubs: Creation of websites dedicated to student groups, clubs, etc., is always encouraged, however, hosting for these sites will not available on the main Jewell web server. For more information about developing sites for a club or organization, please contact Ernie Stufflebean in the Office of Student Affairs.

Access

The Webmaster will create a ContentM user account for any Faculty/Staff member provided a request is made from the respective Department Head. This account is to be used only for creating or maintaing web pages on the ContentM server. Users should always inform the Webmaster when a page is deleted by e-mailing the full name of the page as it appears in the ContentM listing. A minimum of two one-hour training sessions will be required for all new users.

ContentM User Manuals are also available by request from the Webmaster.

Misuse of accounts given out on the ContentM server will result in that account being removed from the system. Department Heads are strongly encouraged to closely manage the activity of any user under their direction.

Web Pages

The home page or main page is usually the entry point which serves as a link to all other web pages within your site/section. The home page typically serves as an index and should contain the following information:

  • Contact information including the name of the department, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address
  • A link to the main Jewell home page (http://www.jewell.edu)
  • Table of contents or list of topics that directs users to subsequent Web pages
  • Page titles should always follow a consistent format; clearly stating the department followed by the page topic. A good example of this naming convention would be: "Music Department: Welcome"

Templates: Pre-formatted page templates are available and should be used respective to the department or interest area that your site belongs. Academic departments are required to use the "Academics" template, while other departments would be required to utilize the "Jewell Basic" template. Custom templates for a web site can be created, but only through permission of the Webmaster and the Office of College Relations and Marketing.

Font usage: All body copy must be based upon stylesheets provided by the Webmaster. Fonts should always be Arial size 2 (or 'small') and page tiles should be Arial size 4 (or 'medium'). New text should always be added by using the 'Paste as plain text' tool in the ContentM rich-text editor. The color of web links on a page is predetermined by the stylesheet, so applying a custom color is discouraged.

Custom page titles using the red 'Great Thinking' script are actually images rather than system fonts, and can be created through a request to the Webmaster.

Images/Graphics: All images must be pre-formatted with a photo-editing tool (Photoshop, MS Paint, etc...) before uploading into ContentM. Resizing an image after uploading will cause distortion as well as overall poor image quality. Images should either be JPG or GIF file format.

Examples of proper formatting...

  • Full page image: Large images that span the width of the page should be no longer than 620 pixels. This custom [landscape] photo is 620x300 pixels, which allows plenty of room below for intro 'welcome' text. (example)
  • Head shots: Images for bio pages don't typically need to fill a page. A good size for a personal profile would be 125x150 pixels. The "Lecture Series" page provides a great example of how bio information and headshots should appear. (example).
  • Logos: Official Jewell logos, along with usage policies, can be found in the online Media Kit. These images can be used on departmental pages, however, site templates already include the Jewell logo in the upper right corner.

One of the best examples of the Jewell web style [graphic and text usage] can be found on the Nursing Department website.
