WJC Men's Soccer Win Big
The #11 nationally ranked William Jewell College men's soccer team overpowered Benedictine College 5-1 at home in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match up Tuesday night, October 17. Jewell took an early lead when senior midfielder Dusty Green scored on a penalty kick. Ten minutes later Cardinal junior midfielder Kevin Nekuda lofted a pass to senior defender Josh Howard. Howard then played the ball to teammate John Barber, who one-timed a shot that beat the Benedictine goalkeeper from close range. That goal put William Jewell up 2-0 at halftime.
The Cardinals came out on fire in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Austin Williams ripped an unstoppable shot from 20 yards to make the score 3-0. Just minutes later Cardinal junior defender Josh Howard served a long pass that found Austin Williams in stride. Williams volleyed the ball over the Raven goalkeeper and the score was 4-0. Not long after, first-year midfielder Manny Tovar found fellow first-year player Matt Happy, who blasted the ball past the Benedictine goalkeeper to extend the score to 5-0. Benedictine did score a single goal with under 5 minutes to play, but the Cardinals were able to come away with the victory 5-1.
“We dictated the tempo of the game from the beginning,” said WJC head coach Chris Cissell. “The players are eager to play every game.”
The William Jewell College men’s team’s record is currently 13-2-0 (6-0-0 in conference), and next face the #4 nationally ranked Graceland University Yellowjackets at Greene Stadium in Liberty on Saturday, October 21. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
