Men’s and women’s tennis achieve Academic All-American status at Jewell Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 July 27, 2009
The William Jewell College men’s and women’s tennis teams have been named as International Tennis Association Academic All-American teams. This marks the sixth straight year that the women’s team has won this award. The men’s team was one of 6 teams from the NAIA which received the honor, and the only men’s tennis squad in the Heart of America Athletic Conference awarded this recognition. The women’s team was one of 9 teams from the NAIA recognized, and the only women’s tennis team in the HAAC to receive this award.
William Jewell’s men’s team compiled a 3.25 GPA and the women’s tennis team earned a 3.30 GPA during the 2008-09 school year. To be eligible for consideration, a team must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale).
William Jewell also placed nine individuals on the NAIA ITA Academic All-American squad. Players honored are Nikki Chambers, Ann Lewis, Megan Groninger, Angela Gambino, Abby Pratt, Michael Holmes, Cody Pflugradt, Chad Kirkland and Kyle Lehenbauer.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a GPA average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
”I am so proud of both teams,” said head coach Paul Worstell. “Our student athletes work so hard in the classroom along with their tennis responsibilities and to receive this recognition is quite an honor.”
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association is a non-profit service organization which serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. Administering a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program, the goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching.
