Athletics: Men's Basketball
Success on and off the court is a highlight of the men’s basketball program at William Jewell. William Jewell has won 14 Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships and has qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament 15 times. The team has made it to the final four of the National Tournament four times. Thirty-seven athletes have won All-American honors (6 1st team), and in 1995-96 Brooke Russell was named NAIA National Player of the Year. Seventeen players have been named NAIA Academic All-Americans. In addition, under current head coach Larry Holley, 112 out of 115 four year players have graduated.
Holley has been the head men's basketball coach at William Jewell College since the 1979-80 school year. He has received 14 Coach of the Year Awards including the prestigious Sears/NABC NAIA National Coach of the Year Award in 1996. He has also been selected to three Basketball Halls of Fame. He has been named to the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and to the NAIA Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the William Jewell College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Coach Holley is the career leader in wins among HAAC basketball coaches. He’s had twenty 20-win seasons (thirteen teams have had 25 or more wins and four have won 30 or more). He became a member of an elite club as he notched his 700th career basketball coaching victory January 3, 2006 with an 83-57 win against Wesley College (Del.). He is only the 28th NCAA or NAIA coach to reach 700 wins (715 was his total entering the 2006-2007 year.) Holley's 715 wins ranks him #26 on the all-time list (NCAA/NAIA) and #10 on the active list (NCAA/NAIA). He ranks #3 among all NAIA coaches (Division I & II – 276 schools) and #13 among four-year college coaches (NCAA I, II, III & NAIA I & II – 1261 schools). He ranks #1 all-time in career wins among four-year college coaches coaching at Missouri colleges/universities only.
