Athletics: Men's Basketball

Success on and off the court is a highlight of the men’s basketball program at William Jewell. The Cardinals have won 25 Conference Championships including 14 Heart of America Athletic Conference Regular Season Championships (the league’s first year was 1971-72). They have qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Tournament 16 times (six at the DI level, 10 at the DII level). WJC has made it to the Final Four five times (1960, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997). The Cardinals have had 38 All-American selections (six 1st team selections), including the 1996 National Player of the Year, Brook Russell. Jewell has had twenty-four Academic All-American selections. The Cardinals rank #3 among all NAIA schools in all-time wins with 1510. William Jewell was the first college in the State of Missouri to play basketball (1898-99).
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Larry Holley is a 1967 graduate of William Jewell. He became the Head Coach of the Cardinals in the fall of 1979. He has received 14 Coach of the Year Awards including the prestigious Sears/NABC NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1996 (the first NAIA coach to receive the award). He has also been selected to five Halls of Fame: the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association HOF, the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association HOF, the NAIA HOF, the William Jewell College Athletic HOF and the Missouri Sports HOF.
Coach Holley is the career leader in wins among HAAC coaches. He’s had twenty-two 20-win seasons with thirteen of his squads winning 25 or more and four winning 30 or more games. On January 3, 2006 he became only the 28th coach in NCAA/NAIA history to win 700 games. His current total of 775 wins ranks him #1 all-time in the State of Missouri, #3 among all NAIA coaches all-time, #8 among all active NCAA/NAIA coaches (1261 schools), and #18 on the same all-time list.
