Distinctives:
As a result of their challenging musical preparation, music majors at Jewell have the aptitude, patience and dedication needed to be successful in many careers. Study in a liberal arts setting with a concentration in music makes for a formidable combination when it comes to potential employment as evidenced by the success of our graduates in many areas of music from performance, teaching, church music, and in the wider music business as a whole. Graduates have also been very successful in careers outside of music, employing the skills and self-discipline that are acquired through rigorous study in music to achieve high acclaim in their chosen careers. Some of the unique and distinctive aspects of the department are:
- Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1978;
- Housed in the purpose built Pillsbury Music Center, which includes large and small rehearsal space, practice facilities, keyboard/computer lab and the Forbis recital hall;
- The Harriman Arts Program provides numerous opportunities throughout the year for visiting artists to interact with Jewell students in master classes on campus;
- The Liberty Symphony Orchestra offers our string and wind students the opportunity to gain invaluable orchestral experience at a high level, often playing alongside their teachers and other area professionals;
- William Jewell is the home of the Quimby Pipe Organ Company’s Op. 55, a magnificent instrument that is housed in Gano Chapel and is used for Jewell and area wide events. Organ students regularly practice and perform on this outstanding instrument.
