As a nursing major, you have the opportunity to gain a well-rounded liberal arts education and hands-on nursing experience with a high degree of faculty contact. Unlike many programs, William Jewell works with a variety of hospitals so that students gain experience in a wide spectrum of clinical settings. Our close proximity to downtown Kansas City - just twenty minutes away - gives you access to six medical centers, a variety of hospitals, and more than 10 agencies in and around the greater Kansas City area.
A nursing internship allows you to work directly with experienced nurses on choice units, expand your clinical skills, and become more confident in the role of the nurse. The Pryor Leadership Studies in Nursing Program (PLSP–N) provides you the opportunity to learn personal, professional, and civic leadership through critical reflection, mentoring, and experiential learning.
You may enter the nursing program as a high school graduate, transfer credits from another college or university, or seek admission as a college graduate in the accelerated track bachelors in nursing program. Various college, hospital, state, and federal aid programs are available to help with costs while completing requirements towards the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

The program is based on a philosophy of nursing as a combination of scientific competence and sensitivity to human needs, with an emphasis on the well-being of the whole person. The faculty emphasizes the responsibility and accountability of the individual learner, the blending of academic and practical knowledge, and the highest degree of professional ethics. The hallmarks of a WJC graduate are compassion, excellence in nursing practice, integrity, leadership, scholarship, and service to others.
Parish Nursing
In 1999 the Nursing Department at WJC and Liberty Hospital entered into a partnership to provide resources to faith communities and social groups. The Parish Nursing partnership is called Partners in Health Services. Parish Nursing is the specialized practice of nursing within the context of a faith family, which focuses on the physical, psychological, spiritual and social dimensions of health.
The Department Nursing and Liberty Hospital provide the Basic Parish Nurse course in the Spring of each year for registered nurses, health professionals and eligible students. The content follows the endorsed curriculum established by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, http://www.parishnurse.org/. RN’s are invited to develop an agreement with their own faith community to provide parish nursing services to the congregation following completion of the course.
