Welcome from the President
William Jewell College is an exciting place to be these days. We are enjoying the talents and contributions of an outstanding student body and watching with pride the achievements of our recent graduates.
Elizabeth Hall ’07 is spending the spring of 2008 in Uruguay as a Fulbright Scholar. Chris Rosson ’06 is preparing to spend 2008-09 in Ireland as a George J. Mitchell Scholar, one of only twelve recipients nationwide! These selections continue a tradition of excellence that has resulted in Jewell students and graduates being selected for three Truman Scholarships, three Goldwater Scholarships, three USA Today All-American awards, a Marshall Scholarship, and two admissions into the very competitive NIH-Oxford University PhD program in the sciences. In addition, three students have been finalists in Rhodes Scholarship competition. As a member of the Annapolis Group, Jewell is numbered among a small group of selective liberal arts colleges whose commitment is to providing the best liberal arts education possible.
If you are a prospective student, I encourage you to join the Jewell Journey by clicking on this link.
We are fortunate to be located in a region (Liberty / Kansas City) that provides the best in quality living. Liberty still has a strong community feel even though it has grown to nearly 30,000 residents. Our relationship with Liberty is outstanding, as reflected in Princeton Review’s rating Jewell as having a “town-gown” relationship in the top five in America. And Kansas City provides the best in sports and the arts. Jewell is a provider of one of the most important arts programs in the city—the Harriman-Jewell Series. This Series brings the very best classical performers in the world to Kansas City, and Jewell students have the best seats in the house, free of charge.
As the institution’s recognition as TIME Magazine’s 2001-02 Liberal Arts College of the Year illustrates, Jewell is unique. Long before classes begin, incoming first-year students are contacted by student mentors who will guide them through the first year of higher learning. Once on campus, the first-year students are embraced by small groups of peers, including student mentors, academic advisors, dean for first-year students, counselors and resident advisers. We prepare students to excel academically, professionally and personally, and to develop as leaders who will have a tremendous impact on their world. At William Jewell, students are our first priority, and they comprise the heart of the institution. This priority is just one of the many reasons we have been selected as one of the Colleges of Distinction.
My door is always open, so please feel free to drop by for a visit. If I’m not available, my office staff will be happy to help you in any way they can.
David Sallee, Ph.D. President
