Poet Jason Carney to appear at William Jewell College
Contact: Rob Eisele816-415-7574
February 1, 2006

Poet Jason Carney will offer two presentations of poetry and life reflections on Wednesday, February 15 in Gano Chapel on the William Jewell College campus in Liberty, Mo. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to performance. A morning performance will occur during Chapel Service at 10:15 a.m. and the evening performance will be at 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by College Union Activities (CUA), William Jewell’s student programming board. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. Reservations and tickets are not required.

Jason Carney is a former skinhead who now uses poetry to continue to reform himself and heal others. As a young man, Jason was sent to a juvenile detention center after several violent incidents involving gay bashing and racial intolerance. While in the detention center, Jason roomed with a young gay male who was HIV positive. A friendship formed from what could have been a volatile situation. The experience changed the way Jason saw people that were different from him. After Jason was released, he tried to look up his new friend only to find that he had lost his battle with the disease. Jason has made it his life work to heal and help eliminate intolerance.

All seats are general admission. Doors open 15 minutes prior to each performance. Free parking is available in the commuter lot just inside the main campus entrance at R.E. Bowles Drive and Mill Street, or in the Mabee Center for Physical Education lot just off of H Highway on the east side of the campus. (Visit ../../gen/william_and_jewell_generated_ns_pages/Campus_Map_m11.html for a downloadable map of the Jewell campus.) Parking is limited on campus; an early arrival is suggested.
