What Is Food Rescue?

The William Jewell College Food Rescue Program will work to redistribute excess food from the William Jewell College cafeteria to the hungry in the Greater Kansas City area.  William Jewell College Food Rescue is committed to providing 100-200 meals per week to the Harvesters Food Rescue Program.

How Will the Program Work?

Through the addition of a Student Volunteer Coordinator, the Food Rescue Program will be administrated, staffed, and run by the Students of William Jewell College.  Matt Brillhart of the Pryor Center will provide staff oversight as well as supervision of the program which will work with  5-6 volunteers per shift to prepare the food for pickup.  In addition to student leadership, the program will work with the Harvesters Food Rescue Program that will provide a distribution mechanism that will serve the Greater Kansas City area community without requiring additional liability for the school or program.

What is Harvesters?

Harvesters is Kansas City’s only food bank. Covering a 13-county metropolitan area, Harvesters provides food and related household products to more than 550 not-for-profit agencies including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s homes, homes for the mentally disabled and shelters for battered persons. Harvesters, which was founded in 1979, is a certified member of America’s Second Harvest, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks serving all 50 states. For more information, visit www.harvesters.org.

Who Will Receive the Food the Program Distributes?

Potential beneficiaries of the Harvesters Food Rescue Program distribution include The Don Bosco Centers, Hope House, Our Lady of Mercy Country Home, The Rose Brooks Center, The Salvation Army, and Saint James Place.  The Harvesters Food Rescue Program serves over 10,000 individuals per week in the Greater Kansas City Area and has been steadily growing  the past four years.
