Psychology majors at William Jewell will analyze and synthesize information through research and application, using advanced technology. This major, like all majors at Jewell, encourages applicable, hands-on learning. Students are able to experience the discipline first-hand and take ownership in their education. In addition to tangible learning, students will also engage in written discourse and oral presentation.
Students who study psychology will examine the rich history and philosophical assumptions that are the underpinnings of psychology today. Looking through a Christian context encourages students to value service, understanding, compassion, and the recognition of universal truth.

There is no set path for psychology majors. There are some required courses for all majors but with versatile application and elective classes, there are endless possibilities for students in this discipline. Relatively small class sizes and personal attention allow students to develop relationships with their professors and better understand their choices for the future. A few of the distinctions that the Jewell psychology department provides are:
- Students explore major theories and empirical data of psychology. Our field practicum program offers the opportunity for first-hand experience with the mental health service system;
- Students have the opportunity to participate in empirical research studies and to present the findings at regional and national conferences.
- Psychology graduates have gone on to graduate study in such areas as social psychology, clinical psychology, and counseling. Others pursue areas such as social services, business, law enforcement, and teaching;
- Within the liberal arts setting, it is possible for students to pursue dual degrees in psychology and another field, thus providing students with a more diverse educational background.

Psychology Faculty:
C. Ray Owens, Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Department
Dr. Owens holds a B.S. from Houston Baptist University. He also has an M.A. from the University of Houston - Clear Lake. Dr. Owens received his Ph.D. from Utah State University. He specializes in the areas of developmental psychology, personality and service activities.
Patricia Schoenrade, Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology
Dr. Schoenrade holds a B.A. from Purdue University. She then attended the University of Kansas, where she received both her M.A. and Ph.D. Dr. Schoenrade focuses on the areas of social and experimental psychology, as well as interpersonal relationships and psychology of religion. She also directs the department’s community field work program.
Robert E. Troutwine, Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology
Dr. Troutwine received his B.S. from Southwest Missouri State University. He holds both his M.A. and Ph.D. from Tulane University. Dr. Troutwine's expertise is in industrial, social and sport psychology. He has consulted with several National Football League teams.
