PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Our week-long residential camps, for rising 7th and 8th grade girls (JAWS) and boys (JAMS), focus upon the theme of energy from a multidisciplinary approach. The curriculum, administered by Jewell professors and current students, is integrative and centered upon lab-based independent inquiry. Participating students have the opportunity to engage in activities that span a range of disciplines (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science). The camp curriculum also emphasizes leadership development and teambuilding. Evening activities are generally less formal than the daytime curriculum and range from astronomy and bioart to scientific scavenger hunts and talent shows. The camp culminates in a science fair, where the students give demonstrations and presentations to their family and friends based on their work during the week. The selection process for the Jewell Academies is competitive and merit-based. Applications from students who represent populations generally underrepresented in the sciences are particularly encouraged. LOCATION OF PROGRAM: William Jewell College 500 College Hill Liberty, MO 64068 COST FOR PARTICIPATION: How much does it cost? $200 per camper. Scholarships are available. The scholarships are based on a sliding scale, and both annual income and number of individuals in the family are taken into consideration. The following is a list of family sizes and the upper limit of the annual income for which scholarships are considered. Family of 2 annual income less than $25,062 Family of 3 annual income less than $31,429 Family of 4 annual income less than $37,796 Family of 5 annual income less than $44,164 Family of 6 annual income less than $53,531 Any family making less than the amount shown above, is eligible for a scholarship. The extent of the scholarship (75%, 50%, 25% or minimal charge) is based on a sliding scale. Any parent requesting a reduced rate will need to provide documentation of annual income. If you do not qualify for a scholarship, based on the information above, but feel that you cannot pay the full tuition, we encourage you to send a letter describing your specific situation.
