The Jewell Academy for Women in Science (JAWS) and the Jewell Academy for Men in Science (JAMS) will be in residence on the William Jewell College campus in Liberty, Mo., June 14-20 and June 21-27, respectively. Approximately 40 rising 7th- and 8th-graders from schools across the metro area will attend each week-long session. The interactive camps are funded by a generous grant from The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

The camp will be based on an interdisciplinary and integrative curriculum. Specifically, student participants will be exposed to anatomy, bioethics, chemistry, computer science, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, physics, and physiology through hands-on laboratory learning. In addition to the science curriculum, the camp will feature extensive leadership training, goal-setting, teambuilding and cooperation skills, and personal development.

“Overall, the Jewell Science Academies will offer a cohesive, enriching experience with the goal of preparing students for successful academic careers in high school and beyond,” said Dr. Tara Allen, associate professor and chair of biology at William Jewell.

Students will conclude the weeklong camps with a Science Fair to showcase the lessons learned during the week. The Science Fair for JAWS will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. June 20; the Science Fair for JAMS will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. June 27; both events will be held in Room 107 of White Science Center on the William Jewell campus in Liberty.
