Teaching chemistry in the secondary schools

Students who double major in chemistry and secondary education may receive certification to teach chemistry in grades 9-12 in the State of Missouri. Procedures to be followed in obtaining teacher certification are included in the Student Handbook for Teacher Certification. Specific course requirements for all certification programs may be found on the checksheets available from the office of the Department of Education.

The best person in the education department to ask about secondary education is Dr. Cynthia Green. The representative from the chemistry department on the Secondary Education Council is Dr. Jason Morrill. Contact them for additional information.
Generally what's involved is completing the major in chemistry, learning the basics of other sciences, and meeting all of the state's requirements for secondary-school teachers as well as the college's core curriculum requirements. 126 credit hours (or more) of coursework is involved just in meeting all of these requirements. It is possible to graduate in four years with a teaching certificate, but careful planning is necessary throughout the student's career at Jewell.
