Premedical Advisory Program
Autobiographical Sketch
Special attention should be given to completing the personal comments section on your application for a professional school. There is no single right way to write the essay. Some students do it chronologically; others center it around volunteer/service and shadowing experiences. Some students focus the essay around an event or activity that solidified their decision to pursue a career in health care.
The essay should reflect your enthusiasm and commitment to medicine. It should demonstrate a caring relationship with others. It should reflect why you want to be involved in health care and how you know that the profession fits you. Include details about your knowledge of medicine and your pathway to this point.
Write the essay without any grammatical mistakes or spelling errors. Reread it, and have others reread it. It must be free from errors.
Your statement must be cohesive and coherent. Don't be too creative, but make it so that the reader will enjoy and remember your statement. Ask others if they can recognize you in what you have written.
Many publications address the creation of the personal statement. Click here to see additional advice.
