The William Jewell College baseball team defeated Houston-Victoria (Texas) 9-5 to advance to the second round of the NAIA Championship Opening Round in Lubbock, Texas.
The Cardinals fell behind 3-0 after the first inning then trailed 4-3 heading into the eighth inning. Jon Farris capped off the eighth with a clutch three-run home run to give the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish. Farris finished the game with three hits and five rbi’s and pitcher Steve Johnson hurled 7.1 innings with 10 strikeouts to earn the win for Jewell.
In addition, Head Coach Mike Stockton earned his 300th career coaching victory at William Jewell with the win over the Jaguars.
William Jewell will next take on #1 seed Lubbock Christian University tonight at 6:00 p.m.
