The William Jewell College baseball team placed six players on the Heart of America Athletic Conference All-Conference teams. Outfielder Blake Burks, shortstop Jon Ubbenga and pitchers Luke Kalb, and Jacob Kraft were named to the HAAC All-Conference first team. Pitcher Joe Malin was named to the All-Conference second team while Designated Hitter Joe Summers was named to the All-Conference honorable mention team. In addition, Ubbenga was the winner of the Rawlings Gold Glove award, which is given to individuals that the conference believes are the best defensive players at their positions.
“The players worked extremely hard for these honors,” said Jewell head coach Mike Stockton. “This is quite an honor and I hope we use this positive momentum as we head into the NAIA National Tournament.”
The Cardinals, 43-18, finished second in HAAC and have qualified for the 2009 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round May 12-15. The winners of those nine Opening Round tournaments, in addition to host school Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), will meet at the final site for the 53rd Annual Avista-NAIA World Series from May 22-29 in Lewiston, Idaho. Jewell will travel to Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas for their opening round game against Houston-Victoria (Texas) on May 12.
