William Jewell student receives international scholarship Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 January 24, 2008
Jentry Taylor, a freshman at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., and a resident of Oklahoma City, Okla., has been named one of five recipients worldwide of the 2008 Graeme Clark Scholarship.
The Graeme Clark Scholarship is a unique award open to cochlear implant recipients. The scholarship consists of financial assistance toward a minimum three-year undergraduate degree at an accredited college or university. It is available to those currently completing their final year of high school and to current college and university students. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to the ideals of leadership and humanity.
The scholarship is named for Graeme Clark, a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Melbourne. Dr. Clark conducted pioneering research with implants to aid those with hearing impairments.
Taylor struggled with hearing loss until the age of 15, when she received a cochlear implant. In high school, she was on the honor roll and a member of student council and the varsity tennis team. Taylor has shared her personal story through various speaking engagements and has also written several articles about her experience as a cochlear implant recipient. She is a freshman at William Jewell College, where she is pursuing a double major in non-profit leadership and English with a creative writing emphasis.
With its challenging academic culture and focus on student achievement, William Jewell College promises students an outstanding liberal arts education that cultivates leadership, service, and spiritual growth within a community inspired by Christian ideals and committed to open, rigorous intellectual pursuits.
