Women's Soccer Team Falls in Overtime Contact: Paul Worstell, 816-415-5959 September 5, 2006
The #19 nationally ranked William Jewell College women’s soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 2-1 overtime loss at #13 nationally ranked McKendree College on Saturday, September 2.
A rugged first half saw few scoring chances for both teams and ended with a 0-0 halftime score. With intensity growing as the game progressed, McKendree struck first with a 25-yard shot just out of the reach of WJC freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Ewing. WJC responded quickly with freshman defender Theresa Noll chipping a pass that WJC sophomore forward Nicole Revenaugh headed into the goal to tie the match at 1-1. McKendree scored in the second sudden death overtime to win the match.
“Most teams don’t get such an intense game so early in the season,” said William Jewell College head coach Chris Cissell. “We’re going to continue to play with playoff type intensity for our games this week and the rest of the season.”
The nationally ranked William Jewell College women’s soccer team travels to the University of St. Mary’s in Leavenworth, Kan., on September 7 at 3:00 p.m. William Jewell’s first home match is September 13 against Park University at 5:30 p.m.
