Learn how the world works

In our Biology program you will learn to succeed in all areas of research: experimental design, statistical analysis, field specific techniques, oral presentation skills and scientific writing.

Biology

A degree in biology will help you pursue careers in education, research, medicine, biotechnology, conservation and industry, either through immediate entry into the career or further study at the graduate level.

Why choose biology at Jewell?

Jewell biology students are well-rounded in their knowledge about biology and as practicing scientists, creative thinkers, problem solvers and good communicators.

During your first year, you will be introduced to investigative laboratories that stress that science is curiosity-driven, rather than goal-driven. You will also begin to learn the skills and tools utilized in lab and field experiments, with more sophisticated techniques and instruments added as you progress through the curriculum.

Other pathways through the Biology Department

The department also offers opportunities for study outside the traditional major. Those interested in careers in health-related fields may add a concentration in pre-physical therapy or pre-medicine or earn a B.S. degree in clinical laboratory science. For those interested in applied professions relating to the environment, William Jewell offers a three-two program with Duke University leading to a Master of Forestry degree or a Master of Environmental Management degree.

You also may receive certification to teach biology in grades 9-12 in the state of Missouri by double majoring in biology and secondary education.

Mohammad Abubakar

Sights on medical school

Mohammad conducts research with Dr. Rose Reynolds on the antioxidant defenses of nematodes. These nonparasitic soil worms are resistant to oxygen damage, which can cause age-related diseases like Alzheimer's disease and arteriosclerosis. He also is on Jewell's football team.

Tana Pottorf

Researches axon degeneration in neurodegenerative diseases

Tana used a Journey Grant to volunteer in Oahu, Hawaii for a summer. She volunteered and shadowed a dentist, ophthalmologist and internist who allowed her to screen nursing home patients and read case files.

Beyond Jewell

You may decide to go on to graduate school like biology majors or pursue a career right away. Whatever direction you choose, you will have a strong foundation in the sciences and liberal arts.
