This is a board-level statement regarding the alcohol policies of William Jewell College.

The overall stance of the College on the provision and use of alcohol is based on adhering to the law and encouraging responsible use of alcohol by legal-age adults. Our goal is to create a culture that encourages students to live responsibly in community, including learning to use alcohol responsibly. The College always reserves the rights (1) to make decisions about the provision and use of alcohol based on the particulars of a situation, and (2) to make a determination about the provision and use of alcohol in College programs and activities, including but not limited to College events and social functions, on College property, and through the use of College funds.

This statement is the foundation on which the following operational policies will be clarified and/or established:

  • Student handbook policy regarding student use of alcohol
  • Employee handbook policy regarding employee use of alcohol
  • Expense approval processes that reflect the policies

Policy Guidelines
William Jewell College students and employees are expected to adhere to all laws related to the possession, consumption, and/or distribution of alcohol and narcotics, as outlined by the State of Missouri, Clay County, Missouri, and the City of Liberty, Missouri. The unlawful use, possession, purchases and/or distribution of drugs and alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the William Jewell College campus.

College students and employees are also expected, if they engage in the lawful provision or use of alcohol, to do so responsibly.

Possession and use of alcohol on campus is allowed by legal age persons at approved events and in designated areas, as determined by the administration.

The College requires administration of a student education program that undergirds the legal and responsible use of alcohol.

No use of alcohol by employees will be permitted during the performance of their duties, except by specific exception as approved by the President. Employees are not allowed to provide alcohol to students who are not of legal age.

Unless the College makes a decision or determination to the contrary, beyond the bounds of the campus, the laws of the state and relevant localities will govern the use of alcohol by legal-age adults.
