Jewell to offer three new technology majors

William Jewell College brings critical thinking into the digital world with the addition of three new majors in the technology field. Bachelor’s degrees in computer science, and cybersecurity and information technology will be offered in fall 2024.* To make the programs more accessible, they are being offered as hybrid programs, allowing students to attend select classes while off campus.

Computer Science

Students who are interested in programing and application development will benefit from a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. With the median salary of a software developer exceeding $100,000 in 2023, this program is poised to position graduates to have a successful future. The program will engage students with the skills needed to be successful software and application developers and database managers. During the course of study, students will learn and use Python programming language, HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript coding and gain an understanding in MySQL and C languages. Cybersecurity

Every day, our devices are at risk for cyber attacks. A Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity will put you on the front lines to fend off these attacks. Taking the helm of this program is Jewell alumnus Nick Gicinto, ’03, a seasoned security leader. Gicinto is a veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and has worked with large corporations such as Tesla and Uber protecting their technical assets from global threats. Gicinto has also taken leadership roles at several Kansas City Metro companies focusing on investigations and cybersecurity. Under Gicinto’s guidance as a Professor of Practice, students will learn what threats are present in today’s world, investigate these threats after a breach occurs and how to prevent future attacks by identifying and securing vulnerabilities and threats before they act. Being in the height of the digital age, this degree is in high demand with a 0 percent unemployment rate! With an average salary exceeding $110,000, graduates will see professional growth and success immediately after graduation. information Technology

For students who desire a degree focused on networking, including cloud computing and physical networks, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology is the answer. With job growth expected to exceed 15 percent by 2031 and a median salary of nearly $100,000, a degree in information technology will make graduates competitive in today’s job market. This program will focus on solving problems faced by IT professionals worldwide. Embracing the advancements of cloud-based networking, this degree will not just concentrate on building and troubleshooting physical networks, but also cloud-based solutions as well. Upon competition of this degree, students will be able to successfully complete a CompTIA A+ exam, which is the only industry recognized credential for IT professionals, launching your career aspirations day one! Cybersecurity at Jewell mixes the best of on-campus and online learning environments. Each term, students in the program will take a mix of in-person classes on our beautiful campus in Liberty, Missouri and online courses from the comfort of their dorm, library, coffee shop, or wherever they study best. This hybrid approach allows the students to learn from industry leaders and experts from all over the nation.

With technology advancing every day, the need for skilled and knowledgeable leaders to handle the technological needs of our communities, companies and organizations is growing at staggering rates.
