Tailgating Policy

Tailgating before outdoor sporting events is part of the tradition that makes Cardinal Game Day special. This policy provides guidelines to help ensure a safe, family-friendly game day environment. Tailgating with alcohol is restricted to football games only. All other forms of tailgating are expected to adhere to all non-alcohol related aspects of this policy.

The College reserves the right to determine what behavior is acceptable and unacceptable on its private property. Jewell’s Campus Safety officers and other College officials are authorized to enforce college policies and may, at their discretion, restrict or prohibit access to college property. Individuals or groups who do not comply with this policy or relevant laws may have their campus tailgating privileges revoked by the appropriate college officials and may be removed from college property, among other possible remedies.

When it comes to alcohol, all persons are expected to adhere to all policies and laws related to the possession, consumption, and/or distribution of alcohol, as outlined in the William Jewell College Student Handbook, the Employee Handbook, and by the State of Missouri, Clay County, and the City of Liberty. The unlawful use, possession, purchase, and/or distribution of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the William Jewell College campus.

As an institution of higher learning, we believe that each student, employee, and guest in our community, who is of legal age, makes a personal and conscious choice regarding consumption of alcohol. This personal choice underscores the concept of individual freedom as well as the responsibility of each individual and the community as a whole. Individuals living and learning at William Jewell College are expected to live and act responsibly. This responsibility includes individual choices about the possession and consumption of alcohol and accepting the consequences of those individual choices.

All tailgaters on William Jewell College’s campus, individuals or groups, must comply with the following:


  1. Tailgates can begin no earlier than three hours prior to the scheduled start time.
  2. The tailgating area must be cleaned up and vacated no later than one hour after the end of the game.
  3. For sporting events occurring in Greene Stadium, the lower west side of the White Science Center parking lot, the east side of the Commuter parking lot, and the southeast section of the Mabee Center parking lot will be designated as tailgating areas. Spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tailgating space in the White Science parking lot is reserved for college-sponsored events only. Cardinal fans are encouraged to use the Commuter parking lot tailgate area and visiting team fans are encouraged to use the designated area in the Mabee Center parking lots
  4. Normally, motor vehicles may occupy one parking space only and tailgate activities should not occupy a parking space. Large vehicles, like RVs, are allowed to occupy two parking spaces, as needed for the vehicle. Ideally, parking spaces may not be reserved or saved for others so all fans have an opportunity to select their location. It is recommended that individuals who want to tailgate adjacent to one another arrive and enter parking lots at the same time. Tailgating activities should be restricted to your vehicle space as a courtesy to other fans given the limited nature of the parking lots and the need to keep the lots safe for all participants..
  5. Other areas of campus may be reserved for specific college needs or events and will not be available for all game days.
  6. Only college-affiliated groups, as approved by the administration, may sell admission to their tailgates and products, including but not limited to food, beverages, alcohol, and merchandise.
  7. Household furniture intended for interior use such as couches, chairs, and coffee tables are prohibited in parking lots and tailgate areas.
  8. Tailgating on campus with alcohol is restricted to football games only.
  9. For sporting events occurring at the Softball Field or at Talley Baseball Stadium tailgates cannot take place in the parking lots; rather, they need to be in designated spaces, as determined by the athletic department, on the grounds by the fields/complex. No alcohol is allowed at the softball or baseball complexes.

Alcohol at Football Tailgates

  1. No one under 21 is permitted to consume or possess an alcoholic beverage. Anyone possessing and/or consuming an alcoholic beverage shall possess valid photo identification establishing that he/she is 21 years of age or older and comply with a request to show such identification when requested by law enforcement, game security personnel, or a college official.
  2. All groups serving alcoholic beverages must comply with all college alcohol guidelines.
  3. Playing games that involve consumption of alcohol or use of alcohol-related paraphernalia are prohibited, including but not limited to beer pong, flip cup, shot gunning, etc.
  4. Glass containers are prohibited—all beverages must be in aluminum or plastic containers.
  5. Open source containers (i.e., well drinks, kegs, etc.) are prohibited.
  6. Alcohol is not to be taken outside the marked tailgate area and is prohibited within Greene Stadium.
  7. Public intoxication is prohibited.
  8. The consumption of alcohol is prohibited beyond the scheduled game’s kickoff.

Barbecue Grills

  1. No open flames. Charcoal grills will be allowed; however, embers/ashes shall not be disposed of in/on College property or containers, including in College dumpsters.
  2. Coals must be fully extinguished and cold, then placed into the appropriate aluminum cans or clean noncombustible container for disposal.
  3. An ABC fire extinguisher is required when using a BBQ or grill (ABC fire extinguishers are able to extinguish many types of fires).
  4. Grilling under tents is prohibited.
  5. Propane containers must be secured to the grill or in a crate.
  6. Tabletop portable propane/butane cooking devices, fire pits, and smokers are prohibited.


Tents, tables and other tailgating items cannot obstruct travel lanes.


  1. Trash must be disposed of in proper receptacles.
  2. Groups are responsible for returning their area back to its original state before departing campus.


Amplified sound that can be heard further than five feet away from the unit, or registering more than 80 decibels, is prohibited, including but not limited to radio station vans, live bands, DJs, small battery-powered devices, etc., unless it is sound provided by a college-arranged source.
